Millennials Prefer Tech in Their Care and Their Jobs

According to the Pew Research Center, Millennials, those born between 1982 and 2004, became the largest generation in the labor force in 20161. Millennials however, have gotten a bad rap.  There is a misperception that they are lazy, entitled and unengaged. Actually, the truth is far from that. 

Millennials are engaged in pushing the workplace for changes2 that are desired by most everyone. In healthcare, that translates to a health system that is simpler to navigate and more convenient. As this is the first generation to be 100% digitally native, technology is a way of life. As roles as healthcare consumers and as workers, this group demands technical innovation3

Millennials want health information readily available and easy to navigate. Interactive systems provide On Demand education via videos with the option to validate comprehension after each video. This allows for the consumer to receive information via a platform that is comfortable for them and it isn’t dependent on time or location constraints of face-to-face interaction.

Millennials want healthcare that is patient-centric, meaning they want digital solutions that are personalized across multiple touch points--similar to how they might read email on a computer, phone, or wearable. They expect personal experiences through video education and medication libraries as well as communication via texting and messaging through the education portal. They also appreciate providing timely patient feedback and making their requests digitally.

As workers, this group values a positive and supportive work environment. Millennials were raised to not compete but to collaborate, so they make great teammates. Since teamwork is critical in healthcare, this is an innate strength. Nursing managers and leaders will have to find unique ways to create and support those teams

Technology innovation adoption across the organization are important for retaining millennials as customers and workers. Understand that the constant questioning from millennials can improve processes and change the way hospitals approach tasks in innovative ways.
